A few years ago, I was listening to a lecture at the Truro Theological Society by a theologian who, amongst other things, raised the question of “who owns the text?”. By that he meant that when different people read the same passage from the bible in different ways, who has the last word on its interpretation? His answer was that God has the final word but we may well not know what that word is until the end of all things. His question has stayed in my mind and it seems to me that we can apply it, or something like it, to ourselves as individuals and as a church.
